Virus Information Page

Definition: A program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. Viruses can also replicate themselves. All computer viruses are manmade. A simple virus that can make a copy of itself over and over again is relatively easy to produce. Even such a simple virus is dangerous because it will quickly use all available memory and bring the system to a halt. An even more dangerous type of virus is one capable of transmitting itself across networks and bypassing security systems.

What to do if you suspect a virus

Think your computer is infected with a virus?  No anti-virus software installed?  All is not lost.  McAfee offers an online scan to check for viruses. While it will not remove or repair any infected files it can provide a list of what viruses are active on your PC.  Click for the McAfee Freescan

Another program that we like to use is Stinger.  It is a free program that you download and run.  Stinger only checks for the 30-40 most common viruses at the time so it updates and changes every few weeks.
